About Us

The Castañeda Museum of Ethnic Costume, Inc., located in Tucson, Arizona, is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the study and exhibition of the world’s ethnic and folk costume, (textiles and dolls), thus hoping to cultivate an appreciation and respect for all the world’s peoples and cultures, as well as stimulate the public’s interest in geography.  To accomplish this, the Museum hopes to one day exhibit at least one ethnic outfit from every major country around the globe.  The Museum’s collections consist of almost three thousand individual textiles and related objects (ethnic dolls, masks, etc.).  A majority of the textiles pertain to Mexican and Guatemalan indigenous groups.

At present the Museum does not have its own facility where it can present its collections to the public and is dependent on other institutions for temporary exhibit space. We are searching for a locale of our own in the Tucson area where we can house and display our collections on a permanent basis. The Museum has presented programs in schools, libraries, and other institutions and has exhibited its textiles and dolls both locally and out-of-state. The Museum has managed to operate on a limited budget, as all curatorial work, registrar duties, and clerical work have been based on volunteer commitment. During the past several years our Latin American indigenous textiles have grown into a premier collection, aided by outstanding gifts of unique garments donated by enthusiastic supporters.

Donations of any amount are gratefully accepted and always needed to enable the Museum to purchase textiles/collections when opportunities arise. Funds are also needed for exhibit equipment, conservation supplies, a database system, etc. The Museum also gratefully accepts donations of ethnic & folk textiles/costume, dolls, and masks from anywhere around the world. Monetary, textile, doll, and mask donations are tax deductible to the extent provided by law. (The Castañeda Museum is a 501(c)(3), non-profit, tax-exempt organization.)

The Museum is a member of the Tucson Association of Museums.
